Heatless curls are exactly what they sound like: curls you set without a curling iron, usually overnight. They're gentle on your hair, they fit into your evening routine, and once you've done them twice, they take about five minutes.
What you need
- A heatless curling headband or rod
- A brush or comb
- Optional: a light-hold mousse or leave-in spray
Step by step
- Start with the right texture. Hair should be dry or about 80% dry. Soaking-wet hair may not dry overnight and can leave curls limp.
- Brush and section. Detangle, then split your hair down the middle.
- Place the headband. Sit it on top of your head, centered, with the curling legs hanging down either side.
- Wrap small sections. Take a small section of hair from the front and wrap it around the nearest leg, twisting away from your face. Keep adding hair as you wrap down.
- Secure the ends. Tie off the ends so nothing slips out while you sleep.
- Sleep, then release. In the morning, unwrap gently and break the curls apart with your fingers.
Tips for curls that last
- Smaller sections give tighter curls. Bigger sections give loose, beachy waves.
- Use a light-hold product before wrapping if your hair drops curl quickly.
- Don't brush the curls out. Use your fingers to keep the shape.
- Sleep on satin to help reduce frizz.
Who are heatless curls for?
They work best on hair that's shoulder length or longer. Fine hair can benefit from a little product, and very thick hair may need smaller sections.
